In South Africa, the amount you need to earn to pay tax varies based on your age. Here are the tax thresholds for the 2024 and 2025 tax years:

- 65 to 74: The tax threshold is R148,217 .
- 75 and older: You'll be taxed if you earn above R165,689

Keep in mind that these thresholds apply to your taxable income, which might not be the same as your gross income. Taxable income is calculated after deducting certain expenses and exemptions.

In South Africa, exempt income refers to earnings or receipts that are not subject to income tax. Here are some examples of exempt income, as per the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the Income Tax Act (1962):

- Annuity income from approved retirement funds.
5. Foreign Income:
- Foreign employment income (if taxed in the foreign country).

- Gifts received (except for gifts from employers).
7. Insurance Proceeds:

Other Exemptions:

1. Tax-free allowances for travel, subsistence, and meal allowances.
2. Fringe benefits (e.g., employer-provided accommodation, medical aid).
3. Certain foreign pensions.

Important Notes:

1. Exempt income may still be subject to other taxes (e.g., VAT, PAYE).
2. Exemptions may have specific conditions or limits.
3. Consult the Income Tax Act, SARS, or a tax professional for detailed guidance.
